Collaborations | Collectress

Collectress are an all-female multi-instrumentalist chamber music group based in London and the south-east.

The group’s creative practice is varied and rich, reflecting their many interests. Since the release of their last album Mondegreen in 2014, they have collaborated with choreographer-dancers Miguel Altunaga and Hannah Rudd (Rambert) on new dance and installation works Light Dial: In The Making, Light Dial 2: A Reimagining, and Light Dial 3: Leaf Hall; performed as part of the Melting Vinyl 20 Year Special at the Brighton Dome; supported Kathryn Tickell as part of the No Voices season at Kings Place London; and performed as a featured act at the National Theatre’s Riverstage Festival. Individually, the members of Collectress, work with some of the most innovative and critically-acclaimed artists in their respective fields, including Philip Selway (Radiohead), Penguin Café, Rambert, Ockham’s Razor, Icarus, Mary Hampton and Bat for Lashes, Evan Parker the Ron Caines Trio. From pioneering research into eco-listening, to generative musics and new instruments, from video art and site-specific installations to patterns, painting and cross-arts collaborations, Collectress’ creative palate is full of colour. Whenever they meet to make, the band’s wider interests come together with a bang.

Collectress’ approach honours intuition and process in equal measure- music emerges on the fly or is spun from long periods of playing and sharing, talking and swapping. Their music is dark and light by turns, battling cellos improvising over angular synth harmonies; a violin singing over a Rhodes piano cut through with electronic glitches; clapping, handmade percussion, samples, found sounds and well-directed mischief.

“Like possessed Brontë sisters teasing an unsuspecting dinner party” (Foxy Digitalis)

“The free-thinking with which Collectress write and improvise is informed by their own sensitive absorption of surroundings, making multi-faceted but single-minded sounds. Collectress play chamber music without constraint” (Line Of Best Fit)

“They’re a funny bunch, Collectress- literary, knowing, witty, arch, while being sincere and very, very talented” (Roobla)
